It's never really boring, has good pacing, has moments of awesome... but it's still far from great. It's pretty much right on the line between "above average" and "good".

Not to be defensive, but why not? Because it's set in our world, not it's own. The protagonist (or at least main character) is a person of our world, and their thinking, experiences, the way they view other people and their morality is all based on our being able to self-insert into their position. It's a fantasy, but it's not fantasy. The point of the fantasy genre is to teach us about ourselves through the lives of others who are foreign to us. It's about the universal truths of the human condition, and discovering the richness and beauty of the life we have through an other universe. Isekai doesn't allow for that. It's about imagining "what would I do if I was transported to another world". It doesn't enrich you by being a mirror and allowing self-examination. Isekai is all about fulfilling desires, as opposed to having those desires exposed, examined, and understood. Now Isekai uses fantasy tropes, and is fantastical. But it's fantasy fulfillment and not Fantasy.

But I have a simple rule of adding x10 6 at the end of any number and so multiplying everything they write about by a million. So a Legion of space marines is ten thousand million (a billion), and that makes the scale of a galactic-spanning empire and the wars they fight much more realistic.

But it's fantasy fulfillment and not Fantasy. This is where I think shows like Slime, Re:Zero, Shield Bro and even Mushoku Tensei get the Isekai genre right, and why they're standouts. It's not about the OP protag wielding epic power and being epic for wish fulfillment, those stories show proper growth in the characters. There IS a certain amount of wish fulfillment within the fantasy tropes, sure, but there's self-reflection and a genuine desire of these MC's to do things differently. In the case of Shield Hero, it's more about revealing a side Naofumi didn't realize existed. He lived a relatively comfortable and apathetic life, expected everything in the other world to go right (bc that's what happens in Isekai), and when it didn't he acted like a petulant child in a lot of ways (although the false rape thing was really harsh; understandable he would turn out the way he did). Through friendship with others, and opening himself to the possibility of being hurt again, he was able to grow into the man he wouldn't have otherwise been able to in his world. But yes...you're correct. I would not classify Isekai as "fantasy", despite most Isekai being set in fantasy worlds. Rectangle is a square, square isn't a rectangle, right?

Man....40k is one of those games I so badly want to get into, but I'm hampered by the high cost and the time sink (with 3 kids and basically 6 jobs it's hard to find animu time, let alone gaming time). It's easier to just...create my own TTRPG's, which is what I'm doing now for my "fun time" lol.

Yeah, the rectangle/square thing is spot on. Isekai is its own genre for a reason, and it doesn't have to be trash. Just, it's not doing the same thing Fantasy is.

I have to disagree with the premise of this. I think of Isekai as a subgenre. You can have a fantasy Isekai. You can have sci-fi Isekai. You could even have a SoL Isekai. I think things like "Fantasy" say more about the world structure than it does about the genre on this topic. For example, it's like I would call Frieren a Fantasy Drama much how I would call something a Fanatsy Isekai.

I need to do a rewatch. Another one, not fantasy but 90's/00's mecha, is RahXephon. A lot of people called it the "better Evangelion", which (from a CPOV) is a legit statement. I still prefer Eva, but RahXephon is another fantastic series.

(Eva 10/10, RahXephon 7/10) The big reveal on the mysterious girl... I never would have guessed. I'm long overdue for a rewatch of that one.
