Why the Japanese tend not to write great original Sci-fi

I recommend Crest/Battle of the Stars if you want hard scifi. To an extent Legend of the Galactic Heroes, as a lot of plots involve the effects of physics, or applied Minovsky-style physics in the universe. (Despite LOGH being mostly sociological scifi.) Keep in mind my tastes in anime solidified some time in the early 00s so whatever.
