For me, but not in any order
- Queen's Blade 2 - Neo Human Casshan - Psycho Pass - Serial Experiments Lain - Kill la Kill - High School of the Dead - Valkyrie Drive (for the hype train) - Super Dimension Fortress Macross

I feel like it would be hard watching the anime after reading the manga. Do they do the Black Swordsman arc?

Super Dimension Fortress Macross. I love it so much I have the original series and the movie on LD. It's a great space drama with lots of soap opera twists, parallels to then-modern Japan, a powerful statement on applied memetics and fuck you I love Minmei's music. Macross series boxset is CAV and not CLV (this matters if you're an LD autist). Second favorite is Legend of the Galactic Heroes, which I have a wtfhueg collection of. Since I can only have 3 attachments per post everybody enjoy a pic of the Laserdisc boxsets of the main series. LOGH is incredibly mature, awesome space battles, a labyrinthine story, and fantastic music. I recommend everyone try to watch it at least once, but you can only watch it on Laserdisc due to the series being reanimated for DVD. If all you've done is hear about it for 20 years, give it a shot! And remember that neither side is the "good" guy.

SDF is pretty great. Too bad Harmony Gold hasn't released a lot of it here. I still have a DVD/BR set of SDF as well as the DVDs for Macross Plus, which is beautiful.
The only one of the series I didn't care for was Zero. I haven't seen any of the movies.

I also love Robotech as itself.

Does it get too formulaic after the first one, or do you just like the characters best in that one?

You should watch the original and Plus. Both are pretty great.
