I was going to ask you for a photo of the TV paused, but I thought it would be too much to ask. I think it has a warmer feel, even if the animation wasn't made with CRT in mind. Thanks. It sounds like he doesn't care for much with a heavy romance angle. Though, he likes Spy x Family. So, that one's a bit out of place. Though, I also understand that it has mass appeal and is a fun watch, from what I heard. I even heard of a non-weeb liking it. Sometimes you don't have to know what's going on to appreciate things. Sometimes it lets your imagination run wild. It's like art. Not to derail this thread, but SxF is absolutely fantastic. It's one of the most wholesome, non-CGDCT anime out there. I also know of non-weebs enjoying it. The humor is absolutely fantastic, the intrigue between Yor and Loid, and Anya....she's the freakin cutest little girl I've seen in awhile in an anime (that may be my "parent of 3 girls" showing though). Described my thoughts on it over on Poa.st so copying them here Watched about half of season 1 of Spy x Family and here’s my thoughts. Don’t kill me for this but I don’t really like it that much, For a minor tisj moment IMO the world building is a bit weird, it’s set in a pseudo DDR yet there’s wealthy buisness men and no indoctrination in schools, also they keep talking about a war that Ostania lost but they seem to still have self determination. Now for the main reason I don’t really jive with it, the school plot is boring, I don’t find 5 year olds relatable or really interesting, while the stuff with Yor and Lloyd is interesting, episodes of school plot’s just aren’t engaging to me. Oddly enough, episode 12 was somehow was not the last episode of the series. Could this possibly go to 22-26?
Things seem really rushed, yet there's still more to come. It feels like a lot of story and character building was cut to make time. They set the stakes somewhat high in this episode in a way that makes me want to see how it plays out.
While the situation is nice and somewhat tense (especially around the end of the episode), the deficiencies in characterization show the hardest at these times.
In general, the episode was very aesthetically pleasing and is starting to ramp up urgency.

Supposed to have 13 episodes. Oddly enough this fits well on a tape since it's only like 25 minutes per episode even with commercials.
I would have liked there to have been two cours in this season.

It still seems like a lot to finish in one episode- especially since it feels like they're doing more setup with the brother and Cyan. There's so much focus on Cyan for us knowing basically nothing about her. Maybe that will be revealed in the next episode. They should have done two cours. The first should have been a long leadup to meeting the aliens. Then, the second should have been all of the Venus stuff. A lot of this screams to me that they had a 26 episode plot laid out, but were told to do it in 13.

It's the final episode, and what a mess it is! It's visually and thematically entertaining, but the writing was a mess. > They forgot that the base was exploding > Rouge goes through all of this trouble to stop a rebellion, but then takes the actions that would cause it. Then, everything is okay, anyway. > Jean also wrote an antivirus off screen without telling anyone. > The main villain can get and activate Code Eve at any time, but chose not to, just to be theatrical. > The villain explains that the whole show was just for fun and had no weight, because he was doing it for fun. > They do a sequel hook, but then immediately answer it with a "it goes on" ending. > This woman is dying in about 60 seconds, let's get a few ass shots in the remaining seconds. The series as a whole? I would give it a 5/10. Not great, not terrible. It's mostly just wasted potential that drags to down. I would rank the first half an 8/10. The second half is maybe a 4/10. The last episode is also about a 4/10. It has a lot of neat things going on, but does not use them appropriately. In short, it had a good setup, but never delivered on the payoff. Attachments:

Agreed, the first few episodes were really great, then it got weird, then it kind of ended with a wet plop. Still recommend watching it.

Gonna watch the finale this weekend. Your thoughts kinda sum up my view of the whole series. Wish it had been longer to flesh things out more. Kind of the opposite of Darling in the FRANXX: that one could have used LESS time, to keep the story from dragging on in the second half (in addition to much better writing). But that's TRIGGER's MO: about every other show they create is a masterpiece, and every other show is mediocre. It's like they get full and high off the success of current show, let egos run wild on next show, get humbled and go back to roots for next show, produce successful show (rinse, repeat). Annoying af.

basednrd, you shouldn't be reading spoilers, but it's good that you know what to expect. As radiochan said, it ends with a wet plop. It feels much like the way Trigger does things, where they basically make it up as they're animating it. Unfortunately that has mixed results. I could say a lot about Trigger and its quality, but that's a whole other thread. In the end, we're left with something that had a lot of promise, yet failed to deliver on it. We have a great plot, which becomes flaccid. We have neat characters with interesting backgrounds, but they have no personality or investment in the plot. It's not bad. It just dissolves. The the credits/post credits it tries to be Iria for a moment (aesthetically), but that doesn't amount to much, either. I would have liked to have enjoyed it overall, which I suppose I somewhat did, but just not enough to recommend it.

See... I actually liked the final episode... except it would have been better if the bad-guy-virus WAS the end. Now that would have been one heck of a way to setup a nice big war for season2. BONES studio sucks! I knew it was BONES going in. I knew it was never going to be great because BONES studio sucks. BONES studio only makes mediocre anime targeting 12yo boys and everything they produce is directed as if it targets that audience even if the story/content does not. That said... I still enjoyed it. It put a smile on my face. I looked forward to watching each episode. That counts a LOT for me. 7/10 (good, or above above-average) It's my favorite genre: girly action anime I wish it had more action though... the OP had more action than the rest of the series. lol Winter 2024 ANIME OF THE SEASON! The puppetmaster reveal... was about as expected. "Gladiator" form... wtf lol We never really got those sweet looking WINGS from the OP. So yea... BONES sucks! The anime was pretty consistent though. Even if you didn't like where it ended up going... it was consistent. From the beginning it had a theme of "are you free?" But BONES sucks, so they didn't exploit that theme properly... but whatever.

BONES may make stuff for 12 year olds, but some of it is good, like Soul Eater and FMA: Brotherhood.
Why did you like the last episode?

The last episode tied together the main theme throughout the anime without going off the rails (any farther). I'm not saying it was great. I'm not saying they did a good job presenting its themes (it didn't)... It was "consistent" with the rest of the anime.
