Well, this would have to be done over quite a long time. So ,is it recommended to just start at the beginning, work thought the timeline, and then through the rest?

Yeah I would start at the beginning, although the Advent of the Red Comet really is the "how did it all start" precursor to MSG. Now that I'm thinking about it, you may want to watch that after, bc it would cheapen some things in the original MS Gundam series.
Yeah just start with MSG, then Zeta, ZZ, Char's Counter, then the Advent of Red Comet series to finish it up. Unicorn really is a separate thing, but it's a sequel to ALL of it, and there's things you wouldn't understand without watching all the original shows.

Just finished the Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan, I liked it quite a bit as more Haruhi is always nice, and unlike Haruhi the Manga is finished so switching over to it the anime sadly only covered half of it so it's ending wasn't exactly great (It ironically stops at an Endless Eight reference lol)
Sailor Moon is 200 episodes across 5 seasons. I have see it all! (except for a few specials that I missed)
I had already seen season 5... was just missing the 2nd half of season 4... took me almost 3 months to watch 19 episodes + 1 special + 1 movie... after a nearly 18 year delay!

Was it worth going through it all, or was there a good cutoff point?

Sailor Moon (classic) has 200 episodes... mostly just monster-of-the-week filler.
The new Sailor Moon Crystal reboot... has no filler... and is somehow worse.
The classic series had CHARM. The reboot has no soul.
Worth it? For me, yes. If you aren't already a "fan" because it was your first anime... nah. But, it is the most classic-est of classic magical-girl anime. It pretty much DEFINED the genre. (not claiming it was first, it probably was not, but it is the most well known)
Season 3 - 4 are the low point because of Chibiusa... stupid loli is so annoying. She leaves at the start of season 5 and it goes back to being awesomesauce.
I would say that Cutie Honey defined the magical girl genre while also (possibly) being the first. It had a lot of the tropes that became standard in magical girl material.

IDK much on Magical girl media, I've watched 2 things, Prisma Illya which I thought was weird and dropped (didn't like it much even ignoring the Loli shit), yes it's possible for me to dislike a piece for Fate media lol, and Neo Germania a Swedish National Socialist comic/manga taking from the genre (pic is from it's opening). So I can't tell you much on it lmao
