Macross (yes, finally watching the original) Pretty solid below-average anime (4/10) considering its age. ADMIN NOTE: Oh crap. I just edited your post instead of replying. My mistake. Long story short, you thought Macross was okay for it's time and Max was an absolute man to pick up a green alien wife. LOL ADMIN NOTE: Oh crap. I just edited your post instead of replying. My mistake. Long story short, you thought Macross was okay for it's time and Max was an absolute man to pick up a green alien wife. I should have noticed the edit button is right next to the quote for me. Sorry. I like original Macross. I think it's more of a military drama at times than pure mecha, focusing largely on the drama of the Zentradi. I'd give it like a 9/10, aside form the last 15 episodes or so, which feel tacked on. I'm curious what you'd think of Frontier, which seems like a redo of SDF in a lot of ways. Macross Frontier is good. I think I prefer the TV series over the reboot movie version (they changed stuff). Macross Delta was also good. This time I think the movie version flows a bit better (again they changed stuff, some good some bad). Both of these do a very nice job with battle concerts. SDF was disappointing since they only did that once (though that was probably the best episode). Macross Plus... I saw the dub way back on SciFi ani-mondays... I couldn't get into it. I wonder if subs would make it better. In terms of SDF Macross and military drama... Legend of the Galactic Heroes did that better.

I like Plus. Though, most of my liking of it is for its absolutely beautiful animation. The story is fine. It's just that the animation is where it really shines.I never watch this stuff with dubs. I've taken a stance against watching the movie versions. I generally find anime movies to feel very rushed and unsatisfying. That's why I never bothered with DYRL.
A lot of people disliked Delta, but I liked it. It was neat. I think SDF was still figuring out what it could do to be different from Gundam.

If you know Japanese you will notice that even with subs the translation is often incorrect. With dubs you are likely not even to get a translation but a woke or censored "interpretation".

I noticed that a lot of subs use a "thought for thought" over the "word for word" translation most of the time- rather focusing on the intent of what's being said. That said, I agree that dubs tend to get woke-ified.

BurntJello DYRL is "Do You Remember Love." It's the movie/OVA version of SDF from 1990-something and is generally credited for causing the continuation of Macross as a whole. I hear it's good. I think battle concerts only became a regular thing as of Frontier. Before that (SDF, Zero, Plus), it seemed to mostly be a way to encourage the plots/people. Don't watch Zero, though.

It turns out I watched the movie version back in 2016. I remembered NOTHING from it watching the full series. I guess it was not very memorable. And thanks to Frontier, we got Symphogear and AKB0048, the real masters of the battle concerts!

Forget the thought for thought translation idea. I'm playing octopath 2 and Agnea's humble "I am going to dance" was translated as a prideful "I will shine". Those "translators" feel the need to inject subtle and not so subtle feminism and wokeism into everything. I recommend learning at least some Japanese to notice when it happens.

I mostly watch pre-woke stuff. So, it hasn't been too much of an issue for me. That said, Japan is pretty much going down the woke path right now. So, brace yourself for those types of subtitles to be accurate.

The best thing this season is Oshi no Ko season2 and that is only average.

I looked at some clips from Girls Band Cry and I don't get why people are raving about the animation. It looks like a game cutscene.

I think the two main drawbacks of 3DCG is 1) characters move weird when performing quick motions. It feels like frames are missing. 2) 3D models just aren't as expressive as 2D animation. They don't move in "animated" ways that really stress what's going on.
