I've never seen it, but if you like it you like it. I know my favorites aren't necessarily that well-regarded. Even people that don't like mecha like Code Geass. You should watch it. Any hidden gems that you recommend? Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo ^ I only recommend this AFTER Code Geass since there are some jokes that reference back to it. (both Sunrise studio) For more mecha+strategy: Gundam 00 These are not "hidden" gems... I need more to go off of than just "Code Geass" before recommending more obscure stuff. I LOVED Gundam 00. Another one of my favorites is Hajime no Ippo. I'll check out Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo thanks.

Is there a "best Gundam?" I only ever really hear about Wing, and that was back in the day.

I find it hard to imagine a mecha better than SDF Macross. That said, if there are any more geared toward walking tanks, I'd take that on. I heard Iron Blood Orphans pitched as an option, but I just bounced on the pilot. I should probably watch the original Macross sometime... IBO is the gay gundam. It was OK, not great.. needed more action, but the action was good when it was there. The OP is fire though. Is there a "best Gundam?" I only ever really hear about Wing, and that was back in the day. Seed has the most and I think best action. I can binge all 100 episodes no problem. 00 is next in line. Thunderbolt, Origin, Unicorn, also worth watching but not as exciting. Witch from Mercury is school-gundam so it's mostly not great. Episode 0 IS great though, definitely watch that one.

Watched the first 2 episodes of the Disappearance of Yuki-Chan and so far so good, If anyone's not seen it, without spoiling the movie, it's a series set in the other world from the Disappearance of Haruhi movie.

Do the movies fit in well, or do they feel kind of tacked on?

Is there a "best Gundam?" I only ever really hear about Wing, and that was back in the day. There's lots of "best Gundam". 00, 0083 Stardust Memory, G Gundam (for the unabashed racism), 08th MS Team, Iron Blooded Orphans For the UC timeline, I would say "best" are Zeta, ZZ, Char's Counterattack, and the Advent of the Red Comet series (the prequel to the original MS Gundam). I also REALLY enjoyed the Unicorn OVA series (although the 0096 show has some good alternate takes on certain scenes). The problem with Zeta, ZZ and Char's Counterattack is that you HAVE to watch the original MSG, which can be kind of a slog. I went back and just rewatched the film compilations of those 3 series, which made it easier. I haven't had a chance to see the newer Cucuruz Doan's Island film or the Hathaway's Flash series yet. For it being the original Gundam shown in the US, and the nostalgia glasses we all wear for it, New Mobile Report Gundam Wing is pretty meh. The animation especially. They cut a lot of corners, especially in the first half of the series. Don't EVEN get me started on the dub. As nostalgic and iconic as it is in the Western anime sphere, it's pretty fuckin bad. The second half of Wing picks up pretty great, with a fantastic last episode. Endless Waltz is the better version of Wing, with excellently absurd mobile suit designs, crispy classic OVA animation, and a really good story that finishes the world really well. In terms of manga: Gundam The Origin is absolutely fantastic. It's the COMPLETE story of the rise of Zeon, Char, Ramba Ral, Amuro Ray, etc. The Gundam Wing manga's are great (especially the illustrations in Blind Target). I've not had a chance to read the newer revamp of Gundam Wing, which leads into the Glory of Losers and Frozen Teardrop storylines, but I've heard it's pretty great as a complete story (although I don't know if it retcons anything). I've actually found 2 great fanfictions that are a fantastic sequel to Gundam Wing (albeit kinda romance focused on Heero Yuy/Relena Peacecraft-Darlian and Quatre Winner/Dorothy Catalonia). Anyways....yeah...that's my opinion on Gundam haha. EDIT: SHIT I FORGOT ABOUT SEED!!! Dammit Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny are really freakin good. Animation isn't as good as some others, felt like it got caught between "90's OVA supremacy" and "modern crispy cleanliness", but damn if it isn't a good series. I'm excited to do a rewatch and see the new movie that just came out. I remember buying the SEED compilation films on the UMD discs for the PSP back in the day and watching them on road trips.

With all of that said, for lore implications, would the first series be mandatory to all of the rest? Is it more of the thing where each series tells you the lore you need to know? What about references, such as characters appearing from other series?

That's just the timeline. How much is really need-to-know?

At least it's not a split timeline where certain entries only count sometimes. The Senran Kagura timeline comes to mind, which has 2-3 different starting points.

That's just the timeline. How much is really need-to-know? In the "alternate universes" section, you can just pick any series and watch. They are not related to anything else so there is nothing to miss. For the "universal century" main timeline... I watched Zeta & ZZ before I watched the original that came first. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ For those 3, it's probably best to watch them in order. I even watched Unicorn before the original, it's pretty much fully separate. The thing is, the newer entries tend to be much better than the 80's ones that drag on and on. So since you seem to like older anime, start with the original and follow the sequels from there: myanimelist.net/anime/80/Kidou_Senshi_Gundam

Thanks. I do like older stuff more often. However, I dislike stuff dragging on and on for the sake of it. I think some of the older stuff tends to pad to reach that 36+ episode count.

Yeah this is exactly the problem with older Gundam UC timeline stuff. To understand the newer stuff (which is absolutely better) I would watch like this: Gundam the Origin: Advent of the Red Comet MSG Zeta ZZ Char's Counterattack (finishes Amuro and Char's story) THEN: Unicorn Narrative That is the MAIN Universal Century timeline. There are other stories set within the UC, like 08th MS Team, 0080, 0083, etc, but they have no bearing on the One Year War, Second Neo-Zeon War, etc. Cucuruz Doan's Island movie is a film version of a lost episode from the original MSG (the original cells were corrupted and it was never released) and fits in the original MSG series continuity. Like was said before, all the AU Gundam series (like 00, Wing, IBO, etc) are all standalone and can be watched however. SEED is the only AU Gundam with sequels (SEED, SEED Destiny, Stargazer, and the new SEED Freedom movie) iirc.
