The best way to lie to people is to keep them ignorant of the truth. So, it makes sense that their unfamiliarity plays into it. I just think that the Mormons found a bit of an "in" into Japanese culture through those similarities in Buddhism (or pop Buddhism). You can see a bit of the mentality in isekai, where someone dies, goes to another world, and is essentially the master of their own fate.

Yeah but Isekai is often just wish fulfilment, it is normally not really related to religion. There's a lot of stealth feminism in Japan, and a lot of thisty guys to be catered to, which explains sort of 50% of all anime and manga, the Japanese still take customer service seriously.
Far more important is politics. Almost all Japanese political parties are funded by one or the other Christian or Buddhist sect behind the screens. So the government isn't going to give any decent religious education in schools that goes against these sects. My daughter just got the basics of world religions without any mentions of the dangers of sectarianism. Pious Japanese have to figure it out mostly by themsely.
