Never wish against the Lord's mercy on someone if you want the same mercy extended to you.
The Sophie games are supposed to be pretty good. I think most of them are.

Indeed.
James 2 13: For he shall have judgment without mercy, that has showed no mercy; and mercy triumphs over judgment.
I also started playing Sophie 2 and it is a good game. All the characters are flawed and charming because of it. I just tend to take a break while playing long games like Sophie bu playing shorter ones in between.

I think some people say Sophie is the best one. Or, as some put it Sticc>Thicc.
It sucks that a lot of new anime games are gatchas. It sucks the fun out of them.

Not only physically, Sophie is charming because apart from her skill with alchemy she is quite slovenly. Such flawed protagonists are much more charming than green haired arrogant girls who think the sun is shining from their butt.
Gatcha games are terrible but it seems they bring in a lot of money at a low development cost. So they can be a way to support game dev companies. I guess it is to be expected, the Japanese like gacha gacha machines in real life, they are everywhere here. So I guess virtual gacha gacha is also popular. With all of the patchinko parlors, you can say gambling is a bit of a national vice in Japan.

Yes and no. Gambling is really frowned upon over there. However, they don't view raffles, lotteries, and games of pure chance gambling. The same with gatcha pulls. I think, as long as money isn't explicitly changing hands (trading money for tokens/tickets/balls, however...) it's not thought of as much as gambling. At least their gatchas aren't as bad a Korean gatchas.
That said, gatcha's being profitable helped kill one of my favorite series(Senran Kagura), which has now been a gatcha for years.

Well you are right that legally speaking patchinko is not gambling but morally speaking it is. Gambling for straight money is illegal or at least heavily regulated but they are very creative with the workarounds. Next to each patchinko parlor there is a little shop that happens to buy back the patchinko balls you won.

I believe pachinko was one of those things that was made to circumvent gambling laws. I know, before that, cards were huge. The game was either hanafuda or a predecessor to it. But the crackdown left a void for pachinko to take over. That said, I think the stigma around gambling has waned a bit, as I saw a video where some vtubers went to Vegas and were throwing down $1600 on a single hand.

Back on topic, I played the free demo of the Romancing Saga 2 remake by Square. While e Square hasn't made many good new games recently, some if their remakes, like that of Legend of Mana were fine, and this remake too seems like it will be good, at least judging by the demo.
The 3d characters are in a nice anime style, the males heroic, the females sexy, and the monsters slightly ridiculous like they were in the original game. The first two dungeons of the game are marked improvements over those of the SNES version. You can now jump around and find treasure in hidden corners that were not there before. The turn based battle system has also been improved with a more steady level up system via TP.
Even though I already played the original I will be considering buying the full version of this game when it is released next month.

For some reason I went and bought a 2017 game from Gust at full price, "Nights of Azure 2". While the 3D engine is a bit dated, and the Gust time limit which they dropped in later games still is in full force, this game is fun.
Beautiful, sexy girls, fighting demons with love, faith and prayer, in a fictionalized early 20th century European city setting. The gameplay is a hectic action RPG, with a few puzzles, and difficult bosses. What isn't there to like?
No wokeism. Although there are "lilies" it also doesn't amount to lesbianism, it is female friendship. The game does use the fighting fire with fire idea, the main character, through no fault of her own becomes a half demon and has to use the demons' powers against them, but she bravely opposes her curse. The religion is fictionalized but thoughtfully so, with different factions having different ideas on how to save the world. Recommend.

I'm replaying Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus. It's even more unbalanced than I remember, with most fights ending in seconds (if you use Frantic mode). That said, the characters are lovable, and generally just fun to see interact. I wouldn't say it's as good as Deep Crimson, Burst, or Burst Renewal. I'd probably put it toward the bottom, but above Reflexions and Peach Ball. But, there are no bad games in the series.

I checked it out when it first came out, and it looked poor. It looks a bit sluggish and bland to me. From what I hear, it's closer to "Four Goddesses" (IIRC) gameplay than anything else. I like pretty much all of the other games, but the gameplay of that one seems less than exciting.

Thanks, looks like a skip then, or maybe on a 80-90% sale. I will see if there are other Senran Kagura for Switch.

Do they have the DS games on there? If so, Burst and Deep Crimson are both very good, with Deep Crimson being my favorite entry (even if it's jank). In it, the girls fight demons and try to prevent what boils down to a nuclear explosion.

I actually still have a 2DS (not a 3DS) so I will probably have to check out the second hand shops. Unfortunately DS games don't run on switch unless if they are ported.
